A Little Black, A Little Blue

You guys…if you haven’t read Caroline’s blog, Un-Fancy, stop what you’re doing and check it out. I swear to goodness gracious that it is changing me day by day, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Basically the premise is that every 3 months, she choose 37 pieces of clothing/shoes and remixes and wears them for those 90+ days. She takes pictures of the outfits and posts a new one everyday. Brilliant. And madly inspiring. So much so that yesterday, I did a quick walk through of my closet and immediately pulled out seven things that I haven’t worn in the whole year (7 full months have gone by people!). I’m planning on scouring it more when I have more time, but just taking that tiny step felt great!

Her blog has great tips on how to handle a closet pair down, and her outfit posts can definitely help inspire you and get your creative juices flowing. They certainly got mine going, which inspired this above look.

Basics, but not basic.

ps. Seriously, check out Caroline’s blog and let me know what you think. Anne from In Residence did a great post about her reflections here too! Love it when other bloggers make you think!

  • One, your outfit is wonderful!! I really love the mix of chambray and a pencil skirt! It’s like mixing casual with professional! I just discovered Un-Fancy the other day and love her effortless style! I had no idea that’s how she did it! That’s crazy and I wish I had the willpower to only wear certain items for 90 days, but I’m too forgetful for that lol! But I definitely want to pare down my wardrobe!

    • Thanks Sara! And I’m leaning towards trying it out this fall…but just need some time to figure it all out!

  • Hey, thanks for the shout out! Can’t stop thinking about this Un-fancy business either. Your outfit here is a perfect example of minimal, classic pieces that will mix & match amazingly well across a capsule wardrobe into really sharp outfits. But then I’m convinced you can never go wrong with chambray + a pencil skirt :) Love black & navy too – so chic.

    • p.s. “basics, but not basic” is the PERFECT tagline for this. I define my style (and woah, what a difference putting a specific definition on your style can make for building a wardrobe – a necessary step in getting to this pared down concept, I think!) as “classic basics with a twist”, and that idea of “basics, but not basic” is exactly what I’m going for with outfits. Whether or not I always hit it…

      • Thanks Anne. I think we have a really similar way of thinking about this whole challenge and I’m so excited to see what you come up with…so I can steal it ;)

        • Ha! Feel free to borrow because I’ll be doing it right back. I love finding bloggers with similar styles – and especially some of the exact same wardrobe items – because then I don’t have to think of my own outfit ideas :)

    I absolutely love this look!
