March 2017 Budget

Patterns and prints? Tons of green? Nothing from Target?

What is this? A Style On Target imposter’s post? Nope, just a big change up from last month’s budget! Though don’t worry, there’s plenty of navy and classic patterns to talk about.

Check out March’s budget below to see the damage:

March budget 2017 | Style On Target blog

March 2017 Budget
+ J.Crew Black Sweater Blazer (here)
J.Crew Navy/Maroon Tweed Loafers (similar here)
+ Loft Navy Floral Fit and Flare Dress (here – pure perfection!)
+ J.Crew Green/Navy Geometric Print Skirt (here)
+ Loft Green Floral Print Shell Blouse (here)

Bonus Items:
+ Old Navy Chambray Dress (here – purchased with reward coupon)
+ J.Crew Navy/White Stripe Flats via Poshmark (super similar)
+ J.Crew Blue Locket Necklace (here)

Five items (kind of) five months in a row?! What what! This budget model is really working for me, and it’s getting easier and easier every month. Just a reminder, basic and thrifted items do not count towards the budget and accessories (that aren’t shoes or purses) also don’t count.

Let’s break it down, shall we?!

  1. Shocker of the century: I bought the only remaining color of the J.Crew sweater blazer (here). I couldn’t help myself. It was on super sale (finally). I knew it would sell out (it pretty much has). It’s a classic I have worn and will continue to wear forever. And the number one reason? Just so The Husband could continue to refer to it as a “sweazer”. Hilarious, folks.
  2. These navy/maroon tweed J.Crew loafers (same print in ballet flats here). Can you go to jail for stalking a pair of shoes? Asking for a friend. Because that’s exactly what I did with these beauties. And they were completely worth it! If you could wrap up my style in a shoe…it’s these!
  3. This Loft fit and flare dress is a dream! Perfect fit, perfect pattern, perfect color combo. Can’t beat it! Loft, please make more of your dresses in talls (like this one), so that I can continue to keep buying/wearing them!
  4. This J.Crew geometric print skirt. I have probably passed up this skirt 10 times, because the print is not my normal style and I don’t wear a ton of green. But then I saw someone wearing it on Pinterest and then someone wearing it Instagram…and realized how versatile it really was. So I ordered it, tried it on, and loved it!
  5. And lastly, this pretty pretty pretty floral blouse from Loft! Love the print and love the multiple ways to wear this piece!

Picked up three other pieces this month as well through rewards and Poshmark. Ready to get my spring on!

Things That Didn’t End Up Working
The striped trench from J.Crew that I kept raving about – It certainly was beautiful, but not different enough from the other two beige trenches that I already own, so I couldn’t justify keeping it (but would still encourage anyone else to buy it).
+ The Uniqlo polka dot blouse featured in last month’s 3 Ways to Wear – sadly the dots were tan, not white.
+ This colorful Loft stained glass print blouse – adorable and the prettiest print, but I can’t deal with shoulder ruffles. But maybe you can?
+ These Michael Kors flats – I have been really struggling for some comfy cognac flats, and these were way too matronly on me. Back they go.

April showers bring….a new budget for Katie! I’ve got my eye on a few pieces, but nothing that I have to have, so we’ll see what those showers (and dollars) end up bringing me! ;)

February 2017 Budget

Hello budget my old friend…I’ve come to talk ABOUT you once again…(such a great song, shame she had to ruin it in her silly blog post)!

But yes, I’m officially back from vacation and ready to confess all my awesome February purchases. And get ready, because there are some great ones (I mean…look at that solid color scheme)! And yes, I probably went overboard this month, but that’s because all the retailers are putting out new SPRING merchandise AND had great President’s Day sales…and who saw that coming? Not me!

Check out February’s budget below to see the damage:

february budget 2017 | Style On Target blog

February 2017 Budget
+ Merona Blue Suede Block Heel Sandals (here – other colors available)
Merona Tan/Beige D’Orsay Flats (here)
+ J.Crew Yellow Crossbody Purse (here – comes in so many colors that I need to stop myself from getting another!)
+ J.Crew Tan Regent Blazer (here)
+ J.Crew Navy/White Polka Dot Tee (here)

Bonus Items:
+ Merona Black D’Orsay Flats (here – bought with gift card)
+ J.Crew Navy Sweater Blazer via Poshmark (exact item, but in gray and black)
+ J.Crew Gold Star Sweater via Poshmark

Still going strong (mostly) with this “five piece” budget. I feel like this month was more a cheat than ever (my “thrifted” items still had the tags on them, but were still marked down considerably), but I’m still counting it as a success.  Just a reminder, thrifted items do not count towards the budget and accessories (that aren’t shoes or purses) also don’t count.

I’m also continuing the bullet point summaries of each item, because I think that is the best way to discuss these beauties!

  1. These beautiful baby blue suede block heels from Target were definitely similar to a pair that was mighty trendy last year, and fingers crossed it will be back again….because I have plenty of outfits pinned and now I can join in on the fun! This style comes in four other colors from Target.com, so snag them up while you still can (I love the red ones, also)!
  2. These Merona beige d’orsay flats were an impulse buy, as I actually went in for the black ones (here) as seen in this ‘Gram (here). But I couldn’t decide between the two, and that’s what leftover Christmas gift cards are for…right?
  3. This yellow J.Crew crossbody purse was brought to you by a super sale, a rewards cash coupon, and best friend enabling. I loved my red one so much from last month (and I’ve worn it nonstop), and I wear blue so much that I knew the yellow one would be well loved in my closet. And now no more purses…for quite some time.
  4. This J.Crew tan Regent blazer. I ordered this, because Fran wears and raves about hers all the time, and I certainly love the way it looks on her (and me). I had some credits and a great coupon code, but I didn’t/don’t really need another blazer (though this one looks way better than my old Target blazers). I was honestly thisclose to sending this bad boy back. But then The Husband came upstairs while I was trying it on and actually loved it…and he HATES blazers. So, since this was obviously end of the world territory, I kept it!
  5. And lastly, BUY this navy polka dot J.Crew tee! It’s true to size. It’s classic AND quirky. And if you like this blog, you know that navy is good for you. Enough said!

And because I was continually obsessing over my gray J.Crew sweater blazer (here) and constantly getting compliment after compliment (seriously, a flight attendant on our flight from Austin stopped me to tell me she loved it), I bought another one off a Poshmark seller…this time in navy (which they apparently offered only last year in the fall)! Major score there, along with the sold out Tippi sweater in gold stars (here). Constantly Poshmark/eBay searching does pay off!

Things That Didn’t End Up Working
+ Literally nothing, I tried some work pants on at J.Crew that I didn’t love,  but everything this month just happened to work out!

Annnnnd as for March? I’ve got my eye on these gold wedge sandals (because I have to add to my collection from last year….favorite sandals ever) for sure. I did order this polka dot blouse that I raved about in this 3 Ways to Wear post, but it hasn’t arrived yet so we’ll see if I end up keeping it. What I really need to do is another closet cleanout and make a good list of things I want to add this spring!

January 2017 Budget

Welcome to 2017, friends…where the points are made up, but the budget still counts! Spoiler alert. I am OBSESSED with every. single. item. that I purchased this month, and know that they will be pieces that I wear for many seasons to come!

Check out January’s budget below to see the damage:

January budget 2017 | Style On Target blog

January 2017 Budget
+ Loft Floral Bouquet Sweater (here)
J.Crew Gray Sweater Blazer (here)
+ Loft Cherry Print Fit-and-Flare Dress (here…so warm and cozy!)
+ J.Crew Navy Puffer Coat (here…so warm!)
+ J.Crew Red Crossbody Purse (here)

Bonus Items:
+ Salvatore Ferragamo Black Patent Vara Pumps (thrifted for way less, but original version here)
+ Madewell Yellow Polka Dot Neck Scarf (here)
+ J.Crew Navy/Green Stripe Pom Scarf (here…free because they sent me the wrong color!)

So this “five piece” budget that I piloted (so corporate-business-speak of me) in November and December was perfect for what I needed at this point in my life/style journey that I’m going to continue it into 2017. Just a reminder, thrifted items do not count towards the budget and accessories (that aren’t shoes or purses) also don’t count.

This month I want to try bullet point summaries of each item, because I think they each deserve a short little write up…so here. we. go!

  1. This Loft bouquet sweater might be the prettiest sweater I have ever seen. The flowers are all thickly embroidered on and the colors are vivid and beautiful. Also, who expected me to not purchase the navy and red sweater? It is practically sold out online, so check back often or call your local store to see if they have one in your size. I sized up from my regular medium to a large, because the arms were TIGHT….so just a warning there.
  2. This J.Crew sweater-blazer-thing-a-majig may not look like much and may have also cost me a pretty penny, but I never want to take it off. Like ever. It is super quality (like old-school J.Crew) and fitted to perfection (as long as you size down one size). Warning though, it is another one that is selling out quickly, so read the reviews online (here) if you don’t believe me and order now!
  3. The Loft cherry print dress was scored on super clearance…I think I paid $10 for it? It is the perfect vintage pattern, and I love a good fit-and-flare dress that can be worn at work and during the summer with a jean jacket. I wore it to work once already with a white button down shirt underneath it…and the compliments would not stop coming.
  4. This J.Crew navy puffer coat. I don’t normally count outerwear in my budget, but I already bought my one coat for the 2016-2017 winter season. However, this one was an absolute keeper, because 1.) It’s navy. 2.) You can belt it so you don’t look like a marshmallow. 3.) It is so warm and has the best best best features (fleece-lined pockets, anyone). 4.) I scored it for a great deal during an extra 50% off sale online. Buy it if you’re looking for a great winter weather coat!
  5. And lastly, but not leastly, my new favorite J.Crew red crossbody purse! It is a gorgeous red leather with a fun blue tag accent, and it’s the perfect size for me. I do not mind at all that I spent 10-15 minutes looking for coupon codes online to lower the cost of it it to $80. Well worth it!

And you already know about the score of the Salvatore Ferragamo Black Patent Vara Pumps if you read this post (here).

Things That Didn’t End Up Working
+ This J.Crew oxford check skirt – love the print obviously, but way, way, WAY too short. I knew it would be…and still placed the order!
+  This Loft tulip lace top in navy – Gorgeous and high quality, but I ordered a medium and it was GIGANTIC. Definitely need a smaller size…and might even have to go two sizes down.

Again, I honestly have no idea what I want to add to my closet in February, but man…some of those new spring arrivals are calling my name (and some of them are definitely not…no more bell sleeves, please)!

I need some new work pants, but I don’t plan on counting those towards my budget because that’s boring! And I did already order the tan J.Crew Regent Blazer (here) on super sale with the coupon code of “GETSHOPPING” and some credits that I had. Fingers crossed that I love it, and then I’ll count it towards next month!

December 2016 Budget

This past week (okay, and month) has been a blur of brightly colored lights, piles of presents, sheets of cookies, and dozens of candy canes, but I couldn’t be happier! I love this time of year and spending all the time I can with my family.

I’m off work the rest of the week to hang out with my family and spend all my Christmas cash! But before I do that, let me tell you about how I spent my December dollars! ;)

Check out December’s budget below to see the damage:

December 2016 budget | Style On Target blog

December 2016 Budget
+ Mossimo Supply Co. Tan Hiking Boots (here)
Merona Navy Fair Isle Sweater (here)
+ Mossimo Beige Long Cardigan (here…so warm and cozy!)
+ Boden Black/Gray Houndstooth Print Skirt (here)
+ Sam Edelman Tall Slouch Boots (here)

Bonus Items:
+ Target Brown Faux Fur Scarf (here)
+ Target Layered Statement Necklace (here)

*Update from last month, I ended up not loving the Gap multicolored stripe sweater (here), so back it went. I did end up purchasing another J.Crew corduroy blazer (here – this time in navy) for a very-affordable-can’t-turn-away-price ($60!) during Thanksgiving/Black Friday, so I swapped it into the sweater’s place!

So just as a reminder, during November and December I said I was going to be limiting my budget just to five items per month, not counting all my “loop holes” (outerwear, accessories that aren’t purses or shoes, and/or thrifted items). I held true to this plan last month (check it out here), and this month it was even easier (I think Christmas/presents had something to do with that as well)!

The Boden skirt (here) is stunnnnnner, and piece that will work in my closet for years to come! I already wore it here, but I’m excited to wear it without tights too…actually anything without tights, please!

The two sweaters from Target were actually inspired by other bloggers’ outfits, but trust me when I say that their options were much, much more expensive (the similar cardigan was over $450…gasp!). These are actually two of the best sweaters I have seen from Target in a long time and are not thin by any means. Highly recommend, especially since I got the fair isle in gray for Christmas, so I have both color options of them now!

And lastly, I can’t get over these Sam Edelman boots, and how great a deal I got for them from Amazon (under $80!). Now to get a suede protector spray for them!

Things That Didn’t End Up Working
+ This Gap stripe sweater – as mentioned above, I thought I was going to look this one, so I included it in my November roundup, but it ended up being too crazy and too weird fitting to keep!
+  This Limited blazer – I have a ton of blazers, and this one wasn’t a winner because it was too thin, but I seriously love the print if you don’t mind a ponte blazer!
+ This Loft black scallop lace top – I really really really wanted to love this, because it is exactly what I have been looking for and the quality was great, but the shape was very trapeze style, and that just doesn’t work for my body top, so back it went!

I honestly have no idea what I plan to add to my closet in January…which probably means I don’t need much or at least consult my winter wishlist post (here). Maybe a small red crossbody purse? Or a pair of printed work pants? Definitely no more brown boots, hah!

November 2016 Budget

Whoa. Is anyone else still coming out of the fog that was Thanksgiving break? I think I spent a little bit too much time eating stuffing, watching a billion football games, and throwing all my money at J.Crew during their Black Friday sales.

I have a ton of orders coming in, but since this post is going up today, I had to make an educated guess as to what items I’ll actually end up keeping from my Black Friday haul. So here’s my guess, but I could end up very wrong.

Check out November’s budget below to see the damage:

november budget 2016 | Style On Target

November 2016 Budget
+ Marks & Spencer Navy Ankle Strap Heels (here)
+ Uniqlo Brown Fur Fleece Vest (here – 4 other colors available…I kind of want the black too!)
+ Charter Club Polka Dot Sweater (here)*
+ Gap Multicolored Stripe Sweater (here for the men’s version and here for the women’s version)*
+ Sole Society Green Suede Ankle Boots (here)

Bonus Items:
+ J.Crew Plaid Coat (here – I save up for a new winter coat each year, and this is my 2016 one!)
+ Merona Green/Navy Plaid Scarf (here)

*Means they haven’t arrived yet, but I bet I end up keeping. The other three items have already been worn, so I know they’re keepers!

So just as a reminder, last month I said I was going to be limiting my budget just to five items per month, not counting outerwear and/or accessories that aren’t purses or shoes. I held true to this plan this month, and any of my other Black Friday scores not included above will apply to December….so let’s hope some of them don’t work out! ;)

The new budget helped me make some good decisions about what items I really really really wanted to keep and what items didn’t make the long term cut for my closet. The items above are either classic staples OR fun classic patterns that will keep things in my closet interesting (because Lord knows I would be bored to tears with a completely solid color closet).

And this month, I discovered that my favorite London chain (Marks & Spencer)…now ships to the United States, so my whole life was made. Those gorgeous navy ankle strap block heels (last seen in this post) are perfect for work and look great with and without tights!

The Uniqlo fleece/fur vest (here) was a great dupe for the J.Crew fur vest (here) that was much MUCH more expensive, so win there!

Things That Didn’t End Up Working
+ This J.Crew houndstooth blazer – I have a ton of blazers, and this one wasn’t quite special enough to make it into my closet, but would recommend if you are looking for a work blazer!
+ This Loft cream sweater – I could not even describe how much I did not like this sweater. Boxy and oversized and so not my style.
+ This Ann Taylor tweed skirt – beautiful and gorgeous, but not versatile enough to wear enough times.

Again, I’m sure a lot of my five items next month will be taken up by my Black Friday purchases, but you’ll have to wait to see those! Can’t wait for that “mountain” of packages to arrive! ;)
