From one Indiana University grad to another, this month’s Style Soulmate is Jessica from What I Wore (here).
Because how can you go wrong with a utility jacket, a little black dress, and ankle boots?
You can’t. The oversized scarf keeps it interesting and allows you to mix up the look again and again. Add in some tights when the temperatures finally cool down, and you can keep this look going for a looooonnng time.
So go Jessica, go me, and go Hoosiers (that’s our school’s nickname)!
I stopped in H&M the other day to return some espadrilles that didn’t work out, and I was amazed that some of their fall line was trickling out. Is it really that time already?
I’m not as upset about that realization as some of you might be, because fall is my favorite season to experience and buy clothing during! You all can keep your spring pastels and your summer off-the-shoulder tops, and give me all the ankle boots, scarves, and layers.
But before I get ahead of myself and start trading in my swimsuits for sweaters, I thought I might do a round-up of my favorite summer-to-fall transitional pieces currently for sale at H&M. The beauty of these pieces is that they can be worn now and worn later in completely different ways. For example, wear that awesome striped tee dress now with wedge sandals and a panama hat and later with a black blazer and loafers (and even later with a cardigan and tights and ankle boots). I’ve rounded up a total of 24 items below to help you jump…or ease yourself into fall (depends on how you feel about fall after all)!

Or alternatively titled, “Russian Grandma Goes to Work.”* ;)
I personally think summer is the WORST season to dress for when it comes to work outfits. Outside of work, you can throw on shorts or a skirt with a t-shirt or a tank top or even easier, a sundress, and be good to go. But for work, you have to maintain some sort of professionalism (read no bare shoulders, no flip flops, no shorts, etc.).
And on top of all of that, I find that’s hard to dress when it is so hot outside, but the air conditioning is on full blast in the office!
So to combat all these issues, I keep it simple. A breezy blouse, a solid color flare skirt, a neutral shade of heeled sandals, and a summer scarf. It’s easy remixable (for example, trade out the black pieces for navy or bring another pop of color in with a bright colored blouse), and when you’re leaving the arctic chill of your office, just take the scarf off!
Hopefully, I’ll have some more summer work outfit combinations for you later this summer, but just know that this is the one I default to the most! Summer scarves for the win!
*No offense to those of you who actually have Russian grandmas. I’m sure they dress lovely and are wonderful people!
Sometimes on this blog, I think that I’m fairly creative with my looks. You know, stuff that we all might not think of instantly when walking into our closets. Recent examples: here and here.
And other times? I blatantly steal…from myself.
That’s exactly what today’s look is all about, and it’s not even like I waited that long. This look is a direct ripoff of this one…from a mere two weeks ago! Who knew a great white tee and cream blazer could do so much work?!
Because even if I’m not inspirational to anyone else’s style…at least I know who my number one fan (besides my mom and dad) is…me, myself, and I. ;)
ps. On a serious note, I’m sending lots of love and light to the people of Orlando, the LGBT community, and America as a whole. There aren’t enough words to describe how I feel about the whole thing, but these will have to do for now: More love. Less hate.
Happy (floral) Memorial Day! Hope you all enjoy your day off, eat something off the grill, and most importantly, be sure to remember those servicemen and servicewoman who have lost their lives and thank a serviceman or servicewoman if you see one today!
And after you do all of that, be sure to check out the following sales to take advantage of some amazing Memorial Day weekend sales!
ps. You knew I wouldn’t let a patriotic holiday pass without some more red, white, and blue outfit combinations, right? You know me so well! Plus, you can wear just the tee and the skirt today, and throw on the blazer tomorrow for work! Presto, change-o! ;)
