Lisbon/Portugal Travel Diary

Our next stop was Lisbon in Portugal. We had no idea what to expect from our trip, since we only know a handful of people who have been to Portugal, but what we didn’t really expect was 80+ degrees of summer temperatures in October!

Despite the heat, we really enjoyed all of the sights, sweets, and tile of Lisbon! It’s slowly becoming a more popular European travel destination, but still has a non-touristy feel!

Top Ten Things to Do in Lisbon/Portugal (in the order we did them):

  1. Explore Faster Via a Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus -This is always been my best recommendation in most European cities…the dreaded “tourist” hop-on/hop-off bus. Yes, you look like a tourist on your giant double-decker bus, but isn’t that what we all are when we visit a new/foreign city? These tours help you see the best sites (with some fun facts thrown in) in the city that you are in…and you’ll get there quickly! In Lisbon, the bus will take you out to Belém, which is difficult to get to on your own!
  2. Sample a Pastel del Nata – The tastiest little egg custard pastries (see them in one of my snapshots above) that are basically the national dessert/treat of choice. The best ones (in my opinion) are in Belém, but you can find them everywhere! Best enjoyed warmed with a cappuccino!
  3. Find All the Tile You Can – This should be pretty easy to do, since there are little touches of tile all throughout the city! It’s all over the walls and covering the sidewalks and streets. Apparently, it is super costly to repair when on the ground, and the city has expressed interest in slowly getting rid of it, but the residents just won’t let it go (which I greatly appreciate)!
  4. Take in a Sunset from a Rooftop Bar – A lot of people recommended Park, but I actually prefered the views from Hotel Mundial (though they were both beautiful). Good people, great sangria, and even greater views at sunset!
  5. Try Something Outside of Your Comfort Zone (Foodwise) – Maybe it is octopus salad? Maybe it is cuttlefish stew? Or maybe it is a pastry that you have no idea what is inside of it, because you can’t read Portuguese. Just try it! Worse case scenario? You won’t like it…and you can use your Euros to buy something else!
  6. Hike Up to São Jorge Castle – Lisbon is a lot like San Francisco (hills galore, trolleys, and a Golden Gate-esque bridge), so bring some comfortable walking shoes and hike up some stairs and inclined roads to a Moorish-style castle and gorgeous views of the city.
  7. Explore the Three Neighborhoods – We like our Rick Steves walking tours (no matter what European country we’re in), and he took us through the three neighborhoods  (Rossio, Alfama, and Bairro Alto), each which has its own hidden gems. Lisbon is a great walking city, so if you ever visit, be sure to wind your ways through the hidden alleys/streets.
  8. Listen to Some Fado – The sad and longing musical styling of Portugal. Most commonly, these songs are about the sea or losing someone or something to the sea. We had dinner in a fado restaurant and enjoyed having our seafood with a side of fado songs!
  9. Day Trip It to Sintra – Sintra is a town that is about a 40-minute train ride outside of Lisbon. It has roughly 20 different sites to visit and is definitely worth a day trip (if not even more time)!
  10. Pena Palace – Worth a mention of its own, since it is THE palace (and place) to visit in Sintra (even though the Moorish castle is great too). It was built by the cousin of King Ludwig II (who built Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany), and it basically a Disney castle come to life (see it in the picture directly below). Crazy bright primary colors with tile and carving all over the place! And beyond the castle, the views from the top are great too, and the garden/grounds are gorgeous!

Today’s fun highlights:

  • You know…because that’s a thing. That I just created…on this blog…where I am most definitely not Parisian nor a motorcycle biker.
  • And most people would debate you on the chic part too! ;)
  • This week flew by and I’m happy to be back into the swing of things at work (and not buried under emails after being out)!
  • This weekend we’re staying home, and I’m attempting to clean out my closet (or at least start the process). My side of the closet is slowwwllly starting to take over the whole closet.
  • We’re also going to our annual Halloween party! I’ll try to remember to share our costume on Instagram, but it is a secret until then!
  • Is anyone else dressing up for Halloween? Let me know what you are going as!

Happy weekend, friends! What are you up to?

The Holy Grail of Blazers

This blazer is literally too good to be true.

I pulled it out of the big, ol’ box that J.Crew sends their blazers in and knew right away that it was meant to be.

It’s a great heavyweight of a blazer thanks to the thick corduroy fabric outside and the luxe silk lining inside. The color is a perfect chestnut brown. The little details are perfect (those gold buttons!). And the fit? The fit is killing it. Slimming and structured to boot!

Someone might even say it is the holy grail of blazers. And that someone is me!

And even though it took over half of my monthly budget (which I promptly went over on, see here for more details), I can’t wait to wear it with EVERYTHING this fall and over and over and over through the course of my life.

Because my friends, blazers (not diamonds) are a girl’s best friend!

Ten Things I’ve Loved This Past Week on The Internet:

  1. Can we just talk about this plaid dress…and how pretty it is…and how it comes in patterns of my favorite colors…and how it is only $40?
  2. Blogger love of the week: I told her on Instagram, and I’m telling you here…Madison looks like she walked out of a Boden catalog, in the best way possible!
  3. My favorite cashmere sweater from last year is BACK (in 18 different colors)…so yes, I ordered another one (this time in tan)!
  4. 73 questions with Emma Stone was hilarious (here if you missed it)! “Spirit animal?” No pause. “Dragon.” Love her!
  5. Apparently this week is all about my favorite items from last year, because, my much worn and much loved camel/tan coat from J.Crew Factory is also back! Get it before it sells out! And do I need the green one?!
  6. Three words: houndstooth print vest. Yes, please!
  7. In case you haven’t been preparing for Halloween, here are 20 last minute Halloween costumes for the upcoming holiday! I can’t wait (my friend B throws a big party every year)…and will share my costume when I can!
  8. These might be the BEST ankle boots I’ve seen all season. They come in three different colors (black, tan, and burgundy) and are under $60! Ordering….right…now!
  9. Did you guys here the news? Victoria Beckham is coming to a Target near you come April 2017! I’m kind of intrigued to see her looks! Anyone else?
  10. Can’t get enough of the block heel trend, and these beauties from Ann Taylor are my current favorites!

London Travel Diary

merona utility jacket + black and white stripe tee + loft jeans + vintage coach purse | Style On Target blog

Our first stop on this year’s Europe tour was London, mainly because the flights from the US to London was super affordable, but also because our beloved Colts were playing their first overseas football game.

They happened to lose (super sad), but we still were able to enjoy two days in one of my favorite cities! Two days seems a lot longer before you start to factor in jet lag and airport waiting time, but we still managed to see and do a lot!

Top Eight Things to Do in London (in the order we did them):

  1. Take In an NFL Game at Wembley Stadium – Okay, only if you are really, really obsessed with your team. It was a great experience to watch a super American sport in a foreign country. They don’t just wear jerseys of the two teams that are playing…they wear ALL the NFL jerseys ever. I even got an opportunity to explain one of the rules to some Londoners. Just another day of educating the world ;).
  2. Walk Along the Thames – There is really no better way to see London. There are endless sights to see in this historic city, so slip on some sneakers and pound that pavement. My favorite area to walk in London? Right along the river Thames, where you can see the London Eye, Big Ben, and all those bridges!
  3. Say Hi to Big Ben – My favorite landmark to see in London. And I never get sick of looking at it (I studied abroad in London and have been back two times since)! It just is so iconic and a part of a very important building (the Parliament Building). Fun fact, the name Big Ben refers to the large bell in the tower…which is actually called Elizabeth Tower (yes, after the queen).
  4. Pretend You Live in Buckingham Palace – 775 rooms? It’ll do, I suppose. ;)
  5. Visit One of the Top Museums – The Husband only got the chance to go to the British Museum (home of the Rosetta Stone) and some of the art museums the last time we were in London. So this go-around, we made some time to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum (which is honestly the BEST museum in London, in my opinion). The museum has 2.3 million objects in their permanent collection, and while you can’t possibly see them all, you can pick and choose what topics interest you (fashion and jewelry for me). And did I mention admission is COMPLETELY free?
  6. Ride the Tube – While walking might be the best way to see London, riding the Tube is a must! It’s so easy to figure out, and there are so many stops that you can really get anywhere in the city quite quickly. Just be sure to “mind the gap.” ;)
  7. Have a Drink in a Pub – Pick a pub, any pub! They’re all over, and sometimes, they have the best names! We happened to have a hotel right next to pub called The Fox and Anchor, so of course, I had to con The Husband to have lunch and a pint there. Win, win.
  8. Dine on Fish and Chips – Because while the food may be a little bland in London, at least it is iconic!

Our next stop (which probably won’t be posted until next week) was Lisbon! It was our first time in Portugal, so naturally, I have lots of photos to go through (#allofthetile!).
